From darkness to enlightenment.
Ministry of Education – Ka Hikitia, an education initiative focusing on the development and implementation of a long-term strategy around Māori learning. With the overarching strategic intent of ‘Māori enjoying education success as Māori’.
Task
We were selected as the provider of design and production services within the Ministry, focusing on the development and implementation of Ka Hikitia, the Māori education strategy. Our task was to develop a look and feel specific to Māori, for Māori – an opportunity to deliver a message, that as much as it is about moving forward, it’s about moving up.
We collaborated with the whakairo (carving) class at Whitireia, working together to develop a motif that would be the signature icon for Ka Hikitia. The final design was accompanied by a sound clip and a transcription of it’s meaning completing the tohu (treasure).
To wrap around the tohu we created an overarching visual identity and poutama design from which all publications and reports would have the ability to meaningfully connect with stakeholders at all levels.

We’re a team of creatives – excited about our next project. Seeing is believing, and believing is everything. That’s one reason of many we’re not called beige.
