Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services (NISS) provides a range of social services, which are available for all people living within its tribal boundaries of Ngāpuhi. With its head office in Kaikohe, NISS is the largest Iwi Social Service Provider in Aotearoa and access to their advice and services is free and confidential.
Task
We were entrusted to create an updated visual identity for Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services (NISS). As a subsidiary of Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi, NISS wanted a visual approach that would maintain this connection, and at the same time make its communications recognisable and unique to them.
To maintain a visual connection to the Rūnanga we retained the manu aute (the kite symbol in the shape of a bird). To give substance and form to the identity a set of graphic elements were added to the visual toolbox. These included tāniko designs based on traditional Ngāpuhi kākahu (clothing) and a tohu (symbol) based on the Three Sacred Waves with significant meaning to Ngāpuhi descent.
